Carl is a neurologist and neurophysiologist at Balgrist University Hospital. He does research on degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM) focusing on cerebrospinal fluid pressure dynamics (CSFP). His second research topic is delirium, specializing on risk factor analysis and delirium in neurological disorders.

He spent his neurology residency at Balgrist University Hospital (Head: Prof. A. Curt), University Hospital Zurich (Head: Prof. R. von Känel; psychiatry rotation), and University Hospital of Tübingen (Head: Prof. U. Ziemann), Germany.

During his medical studies at Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, he spent a semester abroad at Claude Bernard University (ERASMUS scholarship), Lyon, France, and completed internships at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia Medical Center, New York City, USA, and European Hospital Georges Pompidou, Paris, France.

Carl received research grants from the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation and Balgrist Stiftung. He was awarded "Best Poster Abstract: Postdoctoral Trainee" at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Delirium Society in Boston, USA. In 2018, he was awarded Fellow of the European Board of Neurology (FEBN). For his doctoral thesis in the field of clinical neurophysiology, he received a scholarship from FAZIT-foundation and a travel grant from the German Society of Clinical Neurophysiology (DGKN).
