Birkhäuser, Veronika Dr.

Veronika Birkhäuser studied medicine at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, Germany and graduated in 2011. She underwent speciality training at the Department of Urology, University of Berne (Inselspital) under Prof. George N. Thalmann and obtained basic surgical education at the Bürgerspital Solothurn. From 2014 to 2015 she worked in the Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of Berne (Inselspital). In 2015, she earned her doctorate (Dr. med., MD) at the University of Berne. From 2017 to 2018 she completed her speciality training in urology under Prof. Michael Müntener at the Stadtspital Triemli and obtained a specialist title as an urologist. Since October 2018 she has been working as a consultant urologist at the Department of Neuro-Urology, Spinal Cord Injury Center & Research at Balgrist University Hospital where she started her PhD in Clinical Sciences in February 2019.

Veronika has a special interest in neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction. For her PhD, she is conducting a nationwide randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind clinical trial investigating transcutanesous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) in patients with acute spinal cord injury to prevent neurogenic detrusor overactivity.
